Plus, if you use steel cable, the constant lifting and lowering flexes the steel repeatedly in the same spot and weakens the cable. The wear and tear that comes from using steel winch cable for plowing can wear out the cable or cause it to break prematurely.
Synthetic cable holds up better than steel cable for plowing. Synthetic cable is more forgiving when it comes to being flexed in the same spot. It’s more flexible and gets tangled less often than steel cable.
Synthetic cable extensions as short as 10 feet are available specifically for plowing. The shorter cable length gives you only as much cable as you need for plowing, and it’s less likely that the cable will get tangled up with the inner layers.
If you switch out your steel cable for synthetic cable, remember to use a brand new fairlead. A fairlead that’s been roughed up by steel cable can slice right through your new synthetic rope.
The 10-foot synthetic plow cable from PROMARK OFFROAD (formerly Gorilla Winches) is the perfect length for ATV plows! See our Blue Steel 10′ ATV Winch Synthetic Rope for more info.
