3000 lb Winch Review by Quad Crazy

Thanks to Rich Schramm of Quad Crazy for this winch review on the ProMark 3000 lb XT Series ATV winch!

Winch installation

Winch installation

I got my hands on a new ProMark 3000lb XT Series ATV Winch from the folks over at www.promarkoffroad.com, and I must say that, I was impressed from the moment it arrived. Besides the impressive box, easy to read instructions, and included hardware, this winch just looks like a heavy duty and well designed product. Inside the box was the roller fairlead, rubber stopper, contactor, thumb switch, hook with strap, hardware, and a corded remote! All that was needed additional, was a bracket for my 2006 Yamaha Grizzly, which was available right on their site.

INSTALLATION

Installing the ProMark Winch was easy enough. I did it before going out to the field, in the back of my Dodge Ram pick-up! A few tools I had in my box got the job done. The hardest part was removing some of my factory plastic. The bracket mounted right up to my stock frame and the winch right up to the bracket, without an issue. If you know the difference between your positive and negative battery terminals, you’ll have no problem hooking this up. I ran the wires up the middle and under the seat, to the battery, and hooked up the switch to my handlebars. It was a breeze.

THE FIRST TEST

Winch controls

Winch controls

I rode my 2006 Yamaha Grizzly out into a wooded, but open area, to run some small tests with this winch. Operation was very good for a traditional winch. I especially like how smooth the cable turns out in the free wheel/spin mode. Engaging this is easy and the switch is located on the side of the winch. Putting it in this mode allows you to pull out the cable without hassle. I ran it in and out a few times to check out the motor operation and to see if there was any heat coming off of it, which there wasn’t. I roped the line around a couple of trees and pulled the Grizzly without any issue, up the hill and tested it letting the winch out slowly back down. The winch motor sounds strong and smooth, giving me no concerns.

ATV hanging from tree

ATV hanging from tree

I hadn’t planned to get out in the mud yet (maybe for my next report), so I thought to myself…How could I really test this thing out? I decided that a good test would be to rope my Grizzly to a tree and see about lifting it off the ground. I know, sounds crazy, and when will this actually apply, but why not. So I let out the winch cable and chucked it over a thick branch and around a tree, probably about 15 feet off the ground. (Don’t try this at home and wear safety equipment and protective gear!) I began to pull my 600 lb (dry weight) 2006 Yamaha Grizzly toward the tree, by engaging the winch switch I mounted on the left handle bar. As I got closer to the tree, the front end started to rise. I proceeded to pull the winch cable in and my quad up the tree. It was now about 70 degrees up in the air! I kept going until it was vertical and back tires off the ground! I forgot to get off…What a site…hung my quad off a tree…it was a first for me. I finally let it down after looking at it for a few minutes hanging there. By no means do I suggest for anyone to do something like this with their quad! Nevertheless, it’s a good test for me. I let out enough cable slack to get the hook to slide down toward me and unhook it. I inspected the cable, hook, winch, bracket, and frame. No issues at all. All looked great. At least I know that on my next run, this winch will pull my ATV without a problem.

FINAL NOTES

This $199 ProMark winch replaced my older Warn 2500 winch that I believe cost me upwards of $400 or so at the time. You would think that the cost difference would show in the product, but I really can’t tell you what the higher priced Warn will give you over the ProMark. The ProMark winch works very well and is definitely worth the money. I’ll be testing this winch out more on the trails and I’ll be sure to report back. Happy Trails!

“Wife got me a ProMark winch. Love it, easy to install – great instructions. Used it and found it quiet and able to pull my Honda 500 out of my favorite mud hole. Would recommend product – heard great things about this winch…”
- D. H.

3000 lb ATV Winch

“Here are some older pictures of my Toyota based truggy [see right]. I have a 3000# Gorilla ATV winch that I use to cinch down the rear suspension during steep descents or off camber situations. Love this winch – it’s been working flawlessly for me for the past 4 years!!!
- Peter B.

4000 lb XT Winch

“One of the best winches I have ever owned and it has plenty of power to spare… Might be designed for a UTV/ATV but it can move a truck that is stuck with the right hardware and not even break a sweat. I have mine mounted on the rear of an Arctic Cat 700 EFI. It gets muddy, wet and covered with gunk – I know I should treat it better – I do bathe it with a power washer each time. I have yet to have a problem with it dealing with water or wet winch.

ProMark Blue Synthetic Winch Rope

“Excellent product. I already installed in my 4×4 truck and is very resistant. The item was delivered the same day that it was purchased and was received on time.”
- E. R. Torres

20K Snatch Block

“I bought a pair of these to augment my existing snatch block for reverse-pull capability from my CJ’s front-mounted hydraulic winch. This snatch block is *beefy* weighing in at nearly 7 pounds of thick plate steel. The pulley axle even has a zerk fitting, something missing on my $50+ brand-name block. It is held together with snap rings instead of a hair pin cotter, so it’s not quickly disassembled like some others out there, but for the price you can afford to buy several of them and greatly expand your winching capability.
- “Cowlick” (Georgia)

“Fast shipping. Finally a ‘REAL’ heavy duty snatch block. Just what I’ve been looking for. Thank You.”
- R. Dunn

Can Your ATV Winch Pull an SUV?

“I Winched My SUV!”
Customer Testimonial by Todd S.

a

3000 lb Waterproof Winch“When I got my 3,000lb Waterproof Winch from the guys at www.gorillawinches.com [now ProMarkOffroad.com], I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’ve used their winches on other ATV’s before, but this was the first go at using their new waterproof line. My first experience with it only reassured me that my decision to get a Gorilla [now ProMark] was the right one.

My SUV would not start. It was in the inclined driveway and I needed to get it into the garage and out of the subzero elements. There was no way I could push the vehicle up the incline and into the garage without risking injury. So I opted to put the new winch to the test right out of the gate.

Having the ATV inside the garage already, I hooked the winch directly to the SUV (no snatch block was used) and proceeded to winch it right on in. That was impressive, but what impressed me even more is that the winch didn’t even have to work. It sounded like it was freespooling! It was quiet, efficient, and got the job without so much as one hiccup.

Since then, I’ve used the Gorilla winch many times to raise and lower my 62” steel plow when clearing the snowfalls we’ve had this winter. I also use it to draw down the front end of my ATV when I trailer it. That helps secure the ATV better for hauling, and is something I could not do by just using my body weight. I’m looking forward to the upcoming riding season here in Minnesota so that I can further prove myself (and others) why my decision to get a winch from the great guys at www.gorillawinches.com was the right one! I’m going to get another Gorilla winch for the rear of my ATV as well!

A huge facet of any purchase (be it an automobile, ATV, television, etc.) is the post sale support. When I’ve ever had any questions, they have not only been willing to help me out but they responded in lightning quick fashion. Partner that level of service with their superior quality and affordable price point and it makes the Gorilla winch the ONLY logical choice for me, bar none.”

ProMark 3000 lb Winch Pulls Out Two ATVs at the Same Time

“I winched 2 ATV’s out of the mud at the same time!”
Customer Testimonial from Rick S. (New Port Richey, Florida)

a

3000 lb ProMark Winch“I bought a Gorilla [now ProMark] 3000 lb. winch for my 400 4×4 ATV. My friends have 700′s with 27″ mud tires. One of them had a winch made by a different manufacturer and it stripped the gear on the drum. I was concerned that I might be in trouble because I bought a less expensive winch.

We were mudding in a hole near my house and one of our buddies got stuck in a hole that has no bottom. Another friend went in to pull him out and he sunk too. I pulled around to get a good pulling angle on the second four wheeler and stretched out my winch cable. We had a 20 foot strap hooked to my 35 foot cable to reach him and another 20 foot strap to the first guy. Both of these four wheelers are 700′s and weigh a lot more then my 400.

I buried my four wheeler, but the winch just pulled me out of my holes. So we hooked another four wheeler to mine and buried both of them. I started winching the two bikes out (at the same time), and when they started moving I realized the power of my little winch, so I stopped and took a picture of the scene with my phone’s camera.

Fortunately, my friends have a good sense of humor. (I will send a copy of the pictures when I get a cable to download them). Then I started winching again. I was truly amazed at the power of my ProMark winch as I pulled two very large bikes, bulldozing through some thick mud at the same time. Of course, when I was done I had to rub in the fact that my cheap little winch pulled their butts out of the mud.

Yesterday we went mudding again and I spent most of the time pulling people out. When I finally went out to do some mudding myself, it was an awesome feeling to be able to get myself “unstuck” with my winch. If you haven’t bought a ProMark winch because you think that paying more is getting more, you are mistaken. I will tell you that my experience has been great!”

ProMark Offroad (formerly Gorilla Winches) XTR 3000 Winch Review by ATV Torture

Thanks to ATV Torture for the following review on the XTR 3000 winch!

3000 pound Polaris RZR winchUpon commencing Project RZR, we knew one thing was for certain: the low center of gravity and weight of the Polaris RZR certainly justified us installing a winch.

In shopping for our winch we found that there are several manufactures on the market to choose from these days. You gotta love the World Wide Web. With our criteria being that the winch needed to be waterproof, it needed to have remote capability either via wireless or wired, and it needed to have some sort of manufacturers warranty that ensured us in the event that for some reason the winch failed, our investment would be protected.

In our search we came across a few models meeting our specifications; however, one attracted our attention even more due to the lower price as well as many positive testimonials.

We found ProMarkOffroad.com (formerly GorillaWinches.com) to be a full service, completely informative site which answered all of our questions about their products completely. Gorilla Winches [now ProMark Offroad] was founded in 2003 by several powersports enthusiasts who had a vision of creating a company which made premium quality products available to consumers at factory direct pricing.

When we called ProMark Offroad we were greeted by a customer service rep whose knowledge about the Gorilla Winch [now ProMark Offroad] product line was perfect. The rep answered all of our questions and it was decided that this was a winch for us to try.

First Impression

3000 pound Polaris RZR winchWe set our sights on the 3000 lb ProMark Offroad XTR Package which comes complete with all necessary mounting hardware, an aluminum Hawse fairlead, rubber line stopper and Blue Steel synthetic winch line / cable.

To control the winch, ProMark Offroad provides a remote tether cord with in and out switch. This cord allows you to control the winch remotely from up to 10’ away.

Additionally ProMark Offroad also provides you with the standard thumb rocker switch to control the winch from inside the cab of the RZR. The vehicle specific mounting plate is sold separately; however, when you factor everything included with the winch kit, you still get a fantastic value.

Here are the specs of the Gorilla Winch [now ProMark Offroad] XTR:

  • Limited Lifetime Warranty
  • 50’ Blue Steel Synthetic Rope
  • Waterproof Motor
  • Upgraded accessory package which includes a 4 post contactor, handlebar thumb switch, aluminum hawse fairlead, spring hook and strap and a 10’ corded remote control.

UTV winch packagingEverything arrived extremely quick and all the contents were packaged extremely well ensuring no damage would occur during transit. Best of all, when you order from ProMarkOffroad.com, you get free shipping which is impressively fast.

Installation

Polaris RZR mounting plateWe began installing the ProMark Offroad winch mounting plate on the Polaris RZR. ProMark Offroad included very detailed instructions with the mounting plate to make the installation as simple as possible.

Unfortunately the Polaris engineers never intended for a winch to be installed on the RZR. At times during the plate install I felt like I was trying to free myself from some sort of ATV Chinese finger trap. The installation of the mount install is tough, but not impossible. Let it be said, this was in no way any fault from ProMark Offroad; it is just simply a tight fit.

UTV winch freespoolOnce the mounting plate was installed, it was time to begin wiring and mounting the winch. ProMark provides you with all materials, including wire ties for securing the power and control cabling to the vehicles frame.

One thing that impressed me the most was that ProMark Offroad provided us with more than enough power and ground feed cable. Very few manufactures we have dealt with in the past did this. We usually had to add extra power cable or replace the cable all together.

Winch wiring for Polaris RZRWe followed the instructions on wiring the ProMark Offroad winch up to the RZR’s battery power. The instructions were easy to follow which streamlined the install step by step.

After the installation was complete, we tested the engagement and disengagement of the drive clutch. This worked well, so on to our next step, which was to test the function of the rocker switch and the corded remote. These two steps functioned 100%.

Winch wiring - Step 1

Winch wiring - Step 2

Winch wiring - Step 3

Winch wiring - Step 4

Winch wiring - Step 5

Winch wiring - Step 6

Another great thing about the ProMark Offroad XTR winch is the limited lifetime warranty. ProMark Offroad guarantees the XTR winch to be free of defects and workmanship for the lifetime of the winch. Additionally, they warrant the electrical components for 18 months. This seems to be an industry standard for several manufactures.

Ride Report

Winch testWith the ProMark Offroad winch installed and our final tests and safety checks complete it was time to test the XTR winch for what it was made for. We set out to determine how much amperage the winch would draw when under a pull load. We knew this test would vary since the level of consistency would have multiple variables, but at least it would give us an idea of the types of current loads this winch would induce against the RZR’s charging system.

We determined that the ProMark Offroad winch when pulling the empty RZR up a 15 degree grade unloaded would cause a 12 Amp Draw at 20 feet of cable. As the cable wound in, the current draw became slightly less.

We felt the best way to thoroughly test the ProMark Offroad winch would be to perform a recovery of a 1000+ pound vehicle up a steep off-camber incline 15 yards. The ProMark Offroad winch performed flawlessly without the aid of a snatch block. I was extremely impressed at the performance of the winch after this recovery effort. In fact we tried a similar recover with another manufactures winch which actually failed in its attempt pulling the machine out.

Winch cable riggingSwitching the winch from it’s engaged state to free spool takes minimal effort and is accomplished with just a quarter of a turn. This is far better than other winches I have used which require nearly a half turn to engage or disengage the winch clutch; that’s if it isn’t already jammed up with mud and grime.

Call me old fashioned, but I had always been one to prefer steel winch line. The ProMark Offroad XTR winch comes with 50’ of exclusive Blue Steel synthetic winch line. This line is extremely strong, lightweight and is much easier to handle than the traditional steel cable.

Another great thing about the synthetic line is that there is less chance of the line whipping back in the event of a cable breakage; this synthetic line will not do that. Needless to say, I am sold on synthetic line now and will never even consider going back to steel winch line.

Conclusion

ProMark Offroad LogoIt’s good to know that you can hit the trail and be confident in all the equipment that you outfitted on your machine. The ProMark Offroad XTR winch provides me with the confidence to get me out of any trouble that I get myself into. The XTR is very competitively priced and offers many extras when compared to other manufacturers winch packages.

After our intentional abuse of the ProMark Offroad XTR we feel that this is one tough winch. The waterproof ProMark Offroad XTR winch in my opinion easily competes with some of the more expensive winches currently on the market that cost twice as much. With a limited lifetime warranty, you can rest assured that your investment will be taken care of in the event the winch would fail.

If you are on a budget and are looking for a tough winch, you need to seriously give the ProMark Offroad XTR winch some consideration; it is certainly up to the challenge.

ProMark 3000 lb Winch Installation by ATV Fan

We recently picked up a 3000 lb Gorilla [now ProMark] winch to replace an aging Warn 2500 on our grizzly. The price simply can’t be beat, so we were curious to see if it would hold up under serious use/abuse. Subsequent articles will focus on performance during our ongoing field tests, but this first piece of the three-part series will cover installation.

Installation

Winch Parts

Winch Parts

Looking in the box, we were immediately surprised at the amount of hardware. One of the first things we noticed while unpacking was the inclusion of a contactor. After a cursory look at the directions, we were quickly able to get to work on the install.

Winch Mounted on ATV

Winch Mounted on ATV

The first thing you will need to do is mount the winch. If this is your first winch, you’ll need to get a mounting plate. Since we had our trusty Warn already installed, we just reused that plate. This is the easiest part of the install. We removed our front skid plate to access the mounting holes and bolted it on.

Winch Contactor

Winch Contactor

The next step is to mount the contactor. ProMark really gives you some flexibility when installing these other components. I am sure a large part of this is to allow it to fit on many ATV models. Deciding where to mount the contactor is the first step. They recommend close to the battery in a clean and dry location. A typical location would be under the seat or your rear storage box. Not wanting to lose any space in our storage box, we decided to mount it upside down from the top near the back of our storage box. The only disadvantage to this placement is the visibility of the bolts. To our dismay, the shiny new bolts really seem to stick out. Despite that, the mounting is very simple. Drill four holes and bolt it on.

Thumb Switch

Thumb Switch

Next you will need to install the switch to the left side of your handle bars. Here again you have some flexibility where and how to mount it. Just be careful not to mount it over any wires or hoses. The switch does come pre-assembled, but it’s not exactly in an ideal configuration for every situation. You will likely want to use some of the other washers to get a tight fit. We opted to mount the switch just above our other switches.

a

Wiring is the most difficult part of the installation, but even this is not terribly difficult. Wires run from the battery to the contactor, and to the winch. Make sure you route these so they are out of your way. We tried to run them in parallel with other wires already on the ATV. You also need to run the wires from the switch to the contactor. The last thing to do is to splice final switch wire into the key controlled ignition wire. We opted to overlook this last step. Instead we extended this wire to the positive terminal on the battery. This allows us to run the winch even if the ATV is off. It also made for a cleaner installation since we did not splice into our factory wiring. We can’t really recommend splicing into the OEM wires, especially with the non-sealed “trailer” splices they suggest, as there is some risk of corrosion by splicing the wiring in this way. They do make waterproof wire splices which are encased in gel. These, along with something heat shrink-wrapped could provide an adequate solution if someone wanted to wire the switch to the ignition.

Final thoughts

Winch Wiring

Winch Wiring

The main improvement we would like to see is a better, more detailed instruction pamphlet. The instructions were often unclear, and the print quality left a lot to be desired. One possible solution is to visit their website and look at the more detailed PDF. We also got quite a bit of “extra” hardware that we didn’t use. As long as everything works, we’re not likely to complain.

a

Overall, installing this new ProMark winch was fairly easy. A semi-technical person with a little experience and the right tools can expect to finish it in just a couple of hours.

Can the ProMark Winch Survive a Summer of Punishment?

3000 lb Winch Review by ATV Fan

We have had our 3,000 lb Gorilla [now ProMark] winch on our Grizzly all summer long, and it has endured some serious punishment. Our goal was to see if this bargain-price winch could really compare to the more expensive and well-known competition. During our tests, we’ve been buried in both snow and mud, which leads us to the obvious questions. Could this winch save the day, and was it really waterproof?

First impressions

We first installed the ProMark winch in early Spring, just after experiencing a classic late-season Minnesota snowstorm. Piles of wet, heavy snow gave us ample opportunity to test our new rig, and we were quickly mired in a monstrous snowbank. It was finally time to see the bargain winch in action. While it ultimately proved itself powerful enough, the short story is that we were unable to get out of the thick snow using the winch alone. We hooked it to my 5,000 lb S10, but the poor Grizzly didn’t budge. The winch did, however, manage the equally impressive feat of dragging the truck. Needless to say, in most situations, the ProMark winch is a highly capable machine.

More challenges

We have had our grizzly stuck in the mud, hung up on logs, and buried to the seat. In every case the mighty ProMark pulled us out with no problems. Even when the winch was under water or mud it pulled us out. The synthetic rope made all these situations much easier. It is simply more manageable than the steel cable, and contrary to prior belief, it held up well despite the conditions and repeated abuse. Our only real concern after numerous uses is where the rope connects to the hook. Even so, with the low price of replacement, I think it is a nice upgrade over the steel cable.

Final thoughts

Popular wisdom states that “you get what you pay for,” but that may not apply in this particular case. We replaced a Warn 2500 that served us well, but after a long, tough summer, the cheaper ProMark has proven that it is ready to challenge the industry leaders. The big advantage for ProMark of course is the price. If you want to save money and get great performance and above-average reliability, the ProMark delivers. We are continuing a longer term test of this winch, heaping on the punishment. Will it continue to survive? Stay tuned to find out.
