ATV Tire Chain Tips

ATV Tire Chains

ATV tire chains give you traction on snow and ice.

Need some extra traction on the snow and ice? ATV tire chains can give you the extra grip you need to keep your wheels from spinning. Here are a few tips on using ATV tire chains.

  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installing the tire chains. Incorrect installation could damage your ATV, tires, or chains.
  • a
  • Tighten the chains as much as possible by hand for maximum life. The tighter the chains, the longer they will last. Stop and adjust the chains as needed to keep a tight to snug fit throughout use.
  • a
  • Do not use ATV chains with the tires aired down. Check the owner’s manual for correct tire pressure.
  • a
  • Adjust the chains periodically to keep the cross chains straight across the tire tread.
  • a
  • Tie back excess links of side chain with a zip tie or wire. If desired, you can cut off the excess links; however, we recommend tying them back in case they are needed in the future.
  • a
  • Accelerate slowly. Do not exceed a speed of 5 miles per hour.
  • a
  • Avoid locking the wheels when braking.
  • a
  • Avoid hitting curbs with your ATV when tire chains are installed.
  • a
  • Remove the ATV chains on bare roads.

Camouflage ATV Cover

Camouflage ATV Cover

This ATV cover is great and it fit my 800 cc two seater CanAm well. Very good price and fast delivery.
Thanks, Ron

Good cover up for the quad, had a handy carrying case when not covering the unit.

This is a great cover for an ATV. I bought this for my boyfriend for x-mas and the camouflage was perfect. The extra-large is a little too big for a 250 yamaha 4-wheeler but its elastic bottom fits snug around the tires.

Was nice to use in the rain. It kept the bikes dry.

Great quality, seems like a really good deal for the quality and the fit of this cover. The straps are in all the right places and the zippered access for the gas tank is perfect. Definitely recommend. Mine is on a Polaris Sportsman 500, which is a big ATV and it has room to spare under this cover.

How to Clean an ATV Cover

Your ATV or UTV cover needs to be cleaned regularly for the best protection.

Your ATV or UTV cover needs to be cleaned regularly for the best protection.

In order for your ATV cover or UTV cover to provide the best protection, it needs to be cleaned every so often. When you clean your ATV cover, however, you need to be careful not to remove the Water-Tec coating (on ProMark covers) or other special coatings applied by the manufacturer.

a
Special Precautions

To protect the coating, which in turn protects your ATV, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning the cover. The following instructions apply specifically to ProMark ATV covers, but they also provide general instructions for cleaning most ATV covers on the market.

If the Water-Tec coating (or other special coating) does get damaged, or if it starts to wear off after years of use or exposure to harsh climates, you will need to either replace the cover or re-apply a water-resistant or waterproof coating.

Washing the ATV Cover

Because of the special coatings on your ATV cover, we recommend hand washing the cover for the gentlest cleaning. Use a soft brush and plain, lukewarm water to clean the cover. If you don’t want to hand wash the cover, you can compromise by cleaning the cover in the washing machine with COLD water, NO SOAP, and on the DELICATE cycle. The use of soap or detergent may remove the protective coatings on the cover and may even void the manufacturer’s warranty.

Drying the ATV Cover

After the ATV cover is washed, we recommend letting it air dry. Your other option is to machine dry the cover on a delicate or air only setting. Remove the cover as soon as it is dry. Make sure the cover is completely dry before folding it for storage.

Frequency of Cleaning

How often should you clean your ATV cover? That all depends on the climate you live in and how much the cover will be exposed to the elements. Wash the cover as often as it needs to be washed. The longer you go without washing a dirty cover, the less protection the cover will offer as the material becomes clogged with dirt and other particles.

Winch Cable for Plowing

10-foot Synthetic Winch Cable for plows

10-foot Synthetic Winch Cable for Plowing

Synthetic winch cable is better for plowing than steel cable. Why? Because synthetic cable handles repeated flexing better than steel cable. Synthetic cable returns to its original shape more easily than steel winch line, so it can withstand the constant up and down motion of plowing without excessive wear.

a

Use a shorter cable length instead of the longer cable you use for off road recovery. It’s cheaper and easier to replace if it breaks. Shorter cable means there’s less chance of binding. Plus, you get more power from the winch because it’s pulling from the bottom layers of cable.

To prevent cable wear, don’t lift the plow all the way off the ground. Four to six inches should be enough clearance to get around. Lifting the plow all the way up places unnecessary stress on the cable, which causes it to fray, weaken, and eventually break.

Don’t let the winch cable rub on the bumper, winch housing, or other sharp edges. Use a winch saver sheath to protect the cable near the hook. The sheath will help prevent excessive fraying or rubbing.

If you switch from steel cable to synthetic rope for plowing, make sure you use a brand new fairlead. The frays and burrs on the old fairlead will cut into your new synthetic rope and destroy it in no time. If the synthetic cable gets wet, spool it out after you’re done and let it dry completely before spooling it back in.

Outfitting Your ATV: Ride with Pride

These ATV accessories give you the freedom to ride and work in rugged conditions.

1. Front Brush Guard and Rear Bumper

Sportsman ATV Front Brush GuardYou might say it’s to keep branches and brush from gouging your paint job. You might say it’s a safeguard for the headlights and grill. And it is. But let’s be honest. The real appeal of that front brush guard is all about the looks. Double that up with a rear bumper, and you’ve got a slick ride in the making.

Bolt-on applications make this a quick mod. The Polaris Ranger and Sportsman brush guard and bumper use existing factory holes for quick installation in less than 30 minutes.

2. ATV Rack and Cargo Bag

If you’ve got a lot of stuff to haul around, an ATV rack and cargo bag give you a place to strap down your gear. You can load up with hunting, fishing, or camping gear, extra fuel for long trips, firewood, coolers, and just about anything else you can imagine. Strapping your cargo down keeps it secure and out of your way while you’re riding. Just make sure not to overload the front or rear of your quad.

3. ATV Winch

No ATV would be complete without a winch. Not only does it make you look good, but it can get you (or your friends) out of trouble when you get in over your head. Getting stuck without a winch can turn a day of exploring into a major headache. With the power of a winch, you can be back on the trail in no time.

Hands down, a winch is one of the most versatile ATV accessories you can come by. Not only does your winch come in handy for trail rides, but you can also use it for yard work, lifting your plow blade, dragging brush or fallen trees, and plenty of other demanding jobs.

Cut Yard Work in Half with an ATV Winch

Keep your yard and garden looking sharp with an ATV winch.

If you own a good chunk of land, your ATV winch can come in handy for more than just pulling you out when you’re on the trail. A winch can turn manual labor around your property into fun. Instead of dreading yard work, you might even find yourself looking forward to it.

The possibilities of using your ATV for yard work are endless. With a winch and plow attachment on your quad, you can move rocks, dirt, sand, gravel, and other materials with little effort. You can shape or level your driveway, work in your garden, and clear out brush in no time with your plow and winch.

Synthetic ATV WinchUsing your winch to lift the plow blade cuts out the effort required to raise and lower a manual lift. If you already own or plan on purchasing an ATV winch for off-road riding, you can double the use of your winch with yard work. You can use your winch to drag fallen logs, large brush, and heavy objects. A winch lets you clean up the shoreline or wooded areas with less manpower and time.

If you use your winch to clear out an area, make sure you take extra precautions to protect your cable rope. Abrasion can weaken or fray the rope and compromise its strength. Use a winch saver or a heavy coat or blanket to protect the rope from rubbing on rocks and other sharp objects. Hook your winch up to the load with a tree strap instead of wrapping the winch cable around the load and hooking the cable back on itself. Also, don’t let the winch rope drag on the ground as you pull.

A plow and winch are highly practical ATV accessories that save you time and manual labor. Since both of these accessories are multi-purpose, you can put them to work any time of the year for a variety of uses. With the power of your ATV and a few simple accessories, you can do heavy landscape and forestry work yourself instead of paying someone else to do it for you. Doing it yourself saves you money and gives you the satisfaction of a job well done.
