How to Make an ATV Cover Last Longer

Keep your ATV cover clean to make it last longer.

An ATV cover keeps your quad clean and dry during storage and trailering. To make your ATV cover last as long as possible and provide the best protection, you need to keep your cover clean and free of debris or snow buildup.

Washing Your ATV Cover

The easiest way to clean an ATV cover is to wash it while it’s on your ATV. Use a soft brush to remove debris and hose the cover down with a low-pressure garden hose. Do not throw your ATV cover in the washing machine, and avoid the use of harsh chemicals. Your ATV cover is designed with special coatings that can be compromised by harsh soaps, chemicals, or bleach.

Do not place a tarp on top of your ATV cover. A tarp will trap moisture underneath the cover and keep the fabric from breathing.

Storing Your ATV Cover

Make sure your ATV cover is clean and completely dry before storage. A wet, dirty ATV cover encourages the growth of mold and mildew. Store the cover in a dry storage area, preferably in a temperature-controlled climate.

Replacing Your ATV Cover

For the best protection, your ATV cover should be free of rips and tears. If the fabric wears through or you get a hole in the cover, it’s time to replace it or take it to an upholstery shop for professional repair.

A UTV cover is one of the least expensive ways you can protect your machine from weather damage and general wear and tear. It can save you money in the long run by protecting your UTV from moisture damage, paint damage, and scratches.

It can also save you time by keeping your machine clean and free of dust or dirt. The cleaner you can keep your machine, the less often you need to wash it. Just pull the UTV cover off, and you’re ready to ride!

How to find the right UTV cover:

Decide whether you need a trailerable cover or simply a storage cover. Trailerable covers must be thick enough and durable enough to withstand the forces of high speed travel, and they should include tie down straps and grommets. Storage covers vary in thickness. UTVs stored in a sheltered area may only need a light cover. Outdoor storage demands thick, weather resistant material.

Measure the length, width, and height of your UTV, including accessories that stick out beyond the length of the UTV, such as racks, brush guards, and other add-ons.

Compare your vehicle’s measurements with the manufacturer’s cover measurements. If your UTV falls between sizes, purchase the larger cover.

Note: The UTV cover should not extend all the way to the ground. A few inches of clearance is recommended to allow airflow underneath the cover.

How to Clean an ATV Cover

Your ATV or UTV cover needs to be cleaned regularly for the best protection.

In order for your ATV cover or UTV cover to provide the best protection, it needs to be cleaned every so often. When you clean your ATV cover, however, you need to be careful not to remove the Water-Tec coating (on ProMark covers) or other special coatings applied by the manufacturer.

Special Precautions

To protect the coating, which in turn protects your ATV, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning the cover. The following instructions apply specifically to ProMark ATV covers, but they also provide general instructions for cleaning most ATV covers on the market.

If the Water-Tec coating (or other special coating) does get damaged, or if it starts to wear off after years of use or exposure to harsh climates, you will need to either replace the cover or re-apply a water-resistant or waterproof coating.

Washing the ATV Cover

Because of the special coatings on your ATV cover, we recommend hand washing the cover for the gentlest cleaning. Use a soft brush and plain, lukewarm water to clean the cover. If you don’t want to hand wash the cover, you can compromise by cleaning the cover in the washing machine with COLD water, NO SOAP, and on the DELICATE cycle. The use of soap or detergent may remove the protective coatings on the cover and may even void the manufacturer’s warranty.

Drying the ATV Cover

After the ATV cover is washed, we recommend letting it air dry. Your other option is to machine dry the cover on a delicate or air only setting. Remove the cover as soon as it is dry. Make sure the cover is completely dry before folding it for storage.

Frequency of Cleaning

How often should you clean your ATV cover? That all depends on the climate you live in and how much the cover will be exposed to the elements. Wash the cover as often as it needs to be washed. The longer you go without washing a dirty cover, the less protection the cover will offer as the material becomes clogged with dirt and other particles.

Not all ATV and UTV covers are alike. You may think that a storage ATV cover could pass as a trailerable cover, but the truth is that storage covers designed solely for storage may not hold up to the wear and tear of highway travel. The three main features that set trailerable ATV covers apart from the pack are material thickness, tie down straps, and a secure fit.

Material Thickness
When you travel at high speeds down the highway, the wind can whip your cover around something fierce. Thinner, less durable materials will tear under the force of the wind.

In order to withstand the wear and tear of highway travel, your ATV cover must be constructed with heavy duty materials. Trailerable ATV covers are thicker and more durable than storage covers, making them able to withstand constant wind, rain, and other forces during travel.

Tie Down Straps
With the force of wind speed, your cover needs to be securely strapped down in order to stay in place. Tie down straps ensure that your cover stays in place on your ATV, UTV, or side by side. You can adjust these straps as needed for a tighter fit.

Secure Fit
Without a secure fit, the wind can whip under the cover and “parachute” your cover. Getting whipped around by the wind can damage your cover. Make sure the trailerable cover for your quad ensures a snug fit to reduce the wear and tear on your cover during trailering.

The fall hunting season is coming up fast. Are you ready for it? Lots of hunters have found that the most convenient way to get to their favorite hunting spot is to use their ATV. It comes in handy for things like carrying your hunting blind and equipment, your firearm or bow, and that 12-point buck you plan to take down.

Depending on how much you plan to carry, an ATV drop rack can come in handy. It gives you some extra storage room on the back of your quad. Secure your hunting gear in the drop basket, or lay the gate down to strap down your kill on an open bed. The steel mesh makes it easy to strap down your stuff any way you need to do it.

Once you reach your hunting spot, slip a camouflage ATV cover over your quad to keep it from spooking the deer and to conceal it from other people in the area.
